Sydney is one of the world’s great outdoor cities for kids: harbour ferries, golden beaches, free playgrounds with BBQs, and wildlife at every turn. Once you’ve recovered from the long flight, it’s very easy with little ones.

Where to stay in Sydney with kids

  • Darling Harbour: next to the aquarium, Wild Life Sydney and the huge Darling Quarter playground.
  • Circular Quay / The Rocks: ferries on your doorstep, with the Opera House and Botanic Garden nearby.
  • Manly: a beach town feel, a ferry ride from the city, with calm Shelly Beach.
  • Bondi: for beach lovers, with rock pools and a famous coastal walk.

The best things to do in Sydney with kids

  1. Taronga Zoo. Arrive by ferry from Circular Quay and take the Sky Safari cable car up. Koalas, kangaroos and harbour views.
  2. SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium & WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo. Side by side in Darling Harbour. Easy for a hot or rainy day.
  3. Darling Quarter playground. One of the city’s best free playgrounds, with water play.
  4. Manly ferry. A 30-minute harbour cruise for the price of a ferry ticket.
  5. Royal Botanic Garden. Picnics with Opera House views and room to run.
  6. Australian Museum. Dinosaurs and a dedicated kids space.
  7. Blue Mountains day trip. Scenic World’s railway and cableway are a thrill for older kids.

Getting around Sydney with a stroller

  • Opal card or contactless: tap on and off trains, buses, ferries and light rail.
  • Ferries: the best (and most scenic) way to get around the harbour, and stroller-friendly.
  • Trains & light rail: most stations have lifts. Check the Transport NSW app for accessible stations.
  • Car hire: useful for beaches and day trips. Add a child seat, as Australia has strict car seat laws.

Where to eat with kids

  • Fish and chips on the beach: a Sydney classic (watch out for seagulls!).
  • Cafés: brunch culture is huge, and many cafés offer a “babyccino” (frothy milk) for little ones.
  • Free public BBQs in parks make for an easy family dinner.

Parent tips for Sydney

  • Parents rooms are common in shopping centres and big parks.
  • September–November and March–May are the most comfortable months.
  • Check whether you need an ETA before travelling. See our visa directory.
