The Algarve is Europe’s sunny southern corner: golden cliffs, sheltered coves, family villas with pools and short flights from much of Europe. It’s warm, safe and relaxed, and one of the easiest first beach holidays with a baby.

Where to stay in the Algarve with kids

  • Tavira & the eastern Algarve: a pretty riverside town with ferries to the long, calm beach on Ilha de Tavira. Great for toddlers.
  • Carvoeiro: a small resort town around a sandy cove, with family villas on the hills.
  • Albufeira: the busiest resort area, with lots of family hotels and attractions nearby. Choose the quieter beaches east of the old town.
  • Lagos: a beautiful old town with famous coves and boat trips. Hillier, so bring a carrier.
  • Vilamoura: a flat marina resort with promenades, which is easy with strollers.

The best things to do in the Algarve with kids

  1. Beach days. Pick sheltered coves or the long sandbars of the Ria Formosa. Lifeguards work main beaches in summer.
  2. Zoomarine. A marine park with shows, pools and rides near Guia.
  3. Water parks. Slide & Splash and Aquashow both have toddler pools and slides for older kids.
  4. Ria Formosa boat trips. Calm lagoon cruises with birdlife and island beaches.
  5. Benagil and Ponta da Piedade boat trips. Spectacular sea caves and rock arches. Check minimum ages and life jackets.
  6. Krazy World. A small zoo and play park inland, great for younger kids.

Getting around the Algarve

  • Car hire: the most flexible option. Book child seats in advance.
  • Trains & buses: a coastal line connects some towns, but stations can be far from beaches.
  • Faro airport: most resorts are 20–60 minutes away.

Where to eat with kids

  • Frango piri-piri: grilled chicken, a local speciality. Ask for it without the chilli sauce for kids.
  • Grilled fish and sardines at beach restaurants.
  • Pastéis de nata and fresh orange juice from local oranges.
  • Restaurants are relaxed with children, and portions are generous.

Parent tips for the Algarve

  • July and August are hot and busy. May, June and September are ideal.
  • Pharmacies (farmácia) are excellent for baby essentials.
