Cancún is an easy beach holiday with kids: short flights from much of North America, family all-inclusive resorts with kids clubs, turquoise water and amazing day trips to cenotes and ruins.

Where to stay in Cancún with kids

  • Hotel Zone (north side): resorts on the calmer bay-facing beaches, close to restaurants.
  • Costa Mujeres: newer, quieter all-inclusives north of the city.
  • Playa del Carmen: about 45–60 minutes south, with a walkable town and access to the Riviera Maya parks.

All-inclusive resorts are popular with families for good reason: kids clubs, splash pools, buffets that suit picky eaters and no planning required.

The best things to do in Cancún with kids

  1. Isla Mujeres. A short ferry ride to Playa Norte, with shallow, calm water perfect for little ones. Rent a golf cart to explore.
  2. Cenotes. Swim in natural freshwater sinkholes. Choose family-friendly cenotes with steps and life jackets.
  3. Xcaret and Xel-Há. Eco-parks in the Riviera Maya with snorkelling, lazy rivers and animals. Long, full days.
  4. Chichén Itzá. Spectacular ruins about 2.5–3 hours each way. Go early, and bring hats and water.
  5. Interactive Aquarium Cancún. A good choice for a rainy or very hot afternoon.

Getting around Cancún

  • Airport transfers: pre-book a private transfer with a child seat. It’s easier than negotiating at the airport.
  • ADO buses: comfortable buses between Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum (no car seats).
  • Hotel Zone buses: cheap and frequent, but crowded.
  • Car hire: useful for cenote-hopping. Add a child seat.

Where to eat with kids

  • Tacos and quesadillas: easy wins. Ask for no chilli (sin picante).
  • Fresh fruit and guacamole: perfect healthy snacks.
  • Resort buffets make feeding fussy eaters easy.

Parent tips for Cancún

  • Drink bottled water and use it for formula.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen, which is required at some parks and cenotes.
  • December to April is the dry season and the most comfortable time to visit.
