Phuket is Thailandโ€™s biggest island and one of Asiaโ€™s easiest beach holidays with kids. Huge family resorts, warm water, kind locals and great-value food make it a favourite for parents. Choose your beach carefully and travel in the calm season for the best experience.

Where to stay in Phuket with kids

  • Kata & Kata Noi: sandy family beaches with plenty of restaurants and mid-range resorts.
  • Karon: a long beach next door, a little quieter than Kata.
  • Kamala: a relaxed village feel with a calmer bay and family resorts.
  • Bang Tao & Laguna: a resort complex with lagoons, kids clubs and free shuttles. Very easy with babies.
  • Patong: lively nightlife and busy streets. Not ideal with young kids.

The best things to do in Phuket with kids

  1. Beach days. Kata Noi, Nai Harn and Kamala are family favourites in the calm season.
  2. Short island trips. Coral Island (Koh Hey) is a short boat ride for snorkelling and calm water. Longer trips such as Phi Phi are long days for little ones.
  3. Phang Nga Bay. Limestone islands and sea caves, best on a larger, more stable boat.
  4. Phuket Old Town. Colourful shophouses, street art and the Sunday walking street market.
  5. Big Buddha. Huge views over the island. Cover shoulders and knees.
  6. Ethical elephant sanctuaries. Choose ones with no riding and no shows, where you observe and feed elephants.
  7. Phuket Aquarium (Cape Panwa). A good rainy-day choice.

Getting around Phuket

  • Grab & Bolt: easier and usually cheaper than street taxis.
  • Pre-booked transfers: arrange child seats in advance.
  • Car hire: useful for exploring, but driving can be chaotic. Avoid scooters with kids.

Where to eat with kids

  • Fried rice, pad see ew and chicken satay: ask for โ€œmai phetโ€ (not spicy).
  • Fresh fruit shakes and mango sticky rice for treats.
  • Beachfront restaurants: sand to play in while you eat.

Parent tips for Phuket

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen, hats and rash vests, as the sun is strong.
  • Pharmacies stock nappies, rehydration salts and baby essentials.
  • Combine Phuket with a few days in Bangkok for a city-and-beach trip.
