Bangkok is big, hot and buzzing, and surprisingly brilliant with kids. Air-conditioned malls hide aquariums and play zones, river boats double as sightseeing tours, and the warmth of Thai people towards children makes everything easier.

Where to stay in Bangkok with kids

  • Sukhumvit (near a BTS station): endless restaurants, malls and serviced apartments, with the Skytrain on your doorstep.
  • Riverside: big family hotels with pools and free shuttle boats to the piers. A calmer, more scenic base.
  • Siam: right next to the biggest malls and the main BTS interchange.

The best things to do in Bangkok with kids

  1. SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World. A huge aquarium under Siam Paragon mall, with a glass-bottom boat ride.
  2. KidZania Bangkok. Kids role-play real jobs in a mini city. Also at Siam Paragon.
  3. Chao Phraya river boats. Cheap, breezy and fun. Hop off at the Grand Palace or Wat Pho.
  4. Wat Pho. The giant reclining Buddha is jaw-dropping for kids, and itโ€™s calmer than the Grand Palace.
  5. Lumphini Park. Shady paths, pedal boats and monitor lizards (watch from a distance!).
  6. Safari World or Dream World. Big days out on the cityโ€™s edge for animal lovers and ride fans.

Getting around Bangkok with a stroller

  • BTS Skytrain & MRT: the fastest way around. The MRT has lifts throughout; not every BTS station has a lift on every exit.
  • River boats: piers have steps and gaps, so fold the stroller and hold hands.
  • Grab: the easiest way to get door to door. Child seats are rarely available, so bring a travel seat if you want one.
  • Tuk-tuks: fun for a short ride, but there are no seatbelts. Best for older kids.

Where to eat with kids

  • Mall food courts: clean, cheap, air-conditioned and full of choice.
  • Mild dishes: khao man gai (chicken rice), fried rice, pad see ew and satay. Ask for โ€œmai phetโ€ (not spicy).
  • Mango sticky rice: the dessert every kid remembers.
  • Fresh fruit stalls: mango, pineapple and watermelon, cut and bagged.

Parent tips for Bangkok

  • Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning, malls and pools for the midday heat.
  • Use bottled water for drinks and formula.
  • Pharmacies (Boots, Watsons and local chemists) stock nappies, rehydration salts and baby essentials.

    • Chatuchak Weekend Market (weekends only) before 11am
    • Lunch at the market

Frequently asked questions

Is Bangkok good for families?

Yes. Thai people are wonderful with children, and the city has excellent malls, aquariums, parks and family hotels with pools. The challenges are heat, traffic and uneven pavements.

Can you use a stroller in Bangkok?

In malls, hotels and parks, yes. On the streets it's hard: pavements are uneven, crowded and often blocked. A baby carrier is much easier outdoors.

How do you get around Bangkok with kids?

Use the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway to skip traffic, river boats for the old town, and Grab for door-to-door rides. Some BTS stations still only have stairs.
