Scored across 7 things that matter when you travel with babies and young kids. How we grade
Last reviewed November 2026
Istanbul straddles two continents, and kids get to cross between them on a ferry for less than the price of a juice. Throw in palaces, bazaars, parks and the warmest welcome for children you’ll find anywhere. It’s a fantastic family city break.
Top things to do in Istanbul with kids
- Ride a Bosphorus ferry. Public ferries from Eminönü or Karaköy to Kadıköy take about 20 minutes. Buy a simit for the seagulls (and yourself).
- Hagia Sophia & the Blue Mosque. Short visits, carrier for babies, and cover shoulders and knees.
- Topkapı Palace & Gülhane Park. Palace courtyards, then the flat, shady park next door for a nap-walk.
- Princes’ Islands. Take the ferry to car-free Büyükada for bike rides, horse-free electric buggies and beaches.
- Istanbul Aquarium in Florya: a huge, step-free rainy-day win.
- Miniatürk: Turkey’s landmarks in miniature. Flat and stroller-friendly.
Stroller or carrier?
Both. Modern parts of the city, seafront promenades (Kadıköy–Moda, Bebek), the trams and ferries all work well with a stroller. The historic centre has cobbles, steep hills and steps, where a carrier is far easier.
Eating out
Lokantas (local canteens) are brilliant for families: point at what looks good, sit down and eat within minutes. Pide salons, kebab grills and seafront fish restaurants are all relaxed with kids. Locals eat with children late into the evening, so nobody bats an eye.
